The Countryside & The Rat

What kind of house attracts vermin?

Any type of house can attract vermin, it doesn’t have to be a dirty house. We would be lying if we told you that not all country houses have rats. They do. Or at least most of them do, and that’s why it’s important to nip things in the bud before your home becomes infested with rats.

How can our beautiful country cottage not be as attractive to the rat, (or mouse for that matter) as we are. We are surrounded by fields and those fields are full of life. We don’t mind that, otherwise we would have moved away by now to a town house. But we refuse to have them sleeping over, and to eventually stay for ever. Not even if they offer to pay us rent.

Do you have rats in your bedroom?

They’re more than likely in your kitchen first, then the bedrooms. Here are a few identifying signs to look out for:

  • Rat or mice droppings. Mice droppings are about the size of a grain of rice, whereas rats are the size of raisins.
  • Tracks. Catch them out. Sprinkle some flour across the edge of the room or wherever you have seen droppings. Then leave a biscuit or something to lure them out. The next morning, you’ll have all the evidence you need.
  • Gnawing. Look out for anything that has been gnawed. Even the edges of your cupboard doors etc.
  • Nests. These consist of chewed up paper. They won’t necessarily look like a cosy nest; just rubbish. You will find nests in attics, basements, or chest of drawers that you don’t use often.
  • Odour. A musty smell.

It’s good to remember that these mammals are very fast breeders, so if you have any of the above, please give Pest Control Seasalter a call immediately.

Don’t wait till it’s too late

One man who decided to clear out his garage had a couple of hair-raising experiences. Thinking that he was grabbing a load of dirt from the corner of the room, he accidentally had grabbed a bunch of black widow spiders, giving him a few sleepless nights. The story doesn’t end there though. He was moving cabinets from one wall to another, when he came across the carcass of a rat. It was big, bloated and mummified. On picking it up, he discovered it was as light as a feather. (We have to stress that he was wearing gloves.) Anyway, the reason it was so weightless, was because the rat was completely hollow inside its skin. (Lovely, hey.) To stop this happening to you, (finding a hollow rat we mean, not becoming hollow yourself) call us! As much as your kids (seemingly boys) would love to find a hollow rat, I’m sure you don’t want to be reminded of how long it had lodged with you. Long enough to die and decompose to the point of nothing. That’s far too long in a family home.
