This is natures way of keeping the forest alive. One of the smallest creatures in Blean’s magnificent woodland is the southern wood ant.

There is no complicated science behind its name. The wood ant was named such because it hangs out in the woods. The wood ant can be found all over Blean. It is one of the largest ants in the UK. You can identify them by their nests, which are made up of wood, grass and twigs. These nests sometimes stand over 3ft tall. If you do find a nest and look at it very closely, prepare yourself for a shock, and if you’re squeamish in any way, then don’t even bother. You will freak out at the sight of all these little creatures working and scurrying around in twisted mazes. These thousands of ants are a mass of activity.

- The average forest has over 500 wood ants in each square metre. That’s roughly the distance from your shoulder to your elbow.
- There are more wood ants on our planet than any other animal or creature of any kind.
- If humans could run as fast as the wood ant, (relative to size of course) then we would be as quick as the fastest racehorse.
- The wood ant can lift up to one hundred times its own body weight. That would be like picking up a bus and taking it home, rather than the bus taking you home.
- The wood ant’s brain is larger than any other insect.
- Wood ants sunbathe regularly on top of their nests. That way, they absorb the heat and then release it into the chamber, acting as solar engineers.
- There is a wood ant named ‘hippy’ after its long hair.
